C4 is used for raiding on PVP servers. Crafting together 1 gunpowder, 1 metal, 1 electric circuit and a gas can converts to 1 C4. Upon throwing, you receive a detonator, which can be used to detonate several C4 simultaneously, only works per player however, so you need to throw the C4 by yourself before.
Right clicking on thrown C4 (left click) with an empty hand returns it to your inventory.
